Your Fall Family photoshoot is just around the corner and you have just thought about getting the whole family coordinated! Yikes! Don’t panic! Here are some simple ideas to get you started. COMFORT

Just remember, you will be walking around outside, bending over, playing with the kids and having a great time. Try to make sure you and the kids are dressed comfortably. If you have any areas that you are a little self conscious off (we all do!) use loose layers to cover up. Thats the best thing about fall, you can never have too many layers!

COLORS & PATTERNS

Take your cue from nature. Summer has left behind all the bright pinks and purples and is making its way towards the burnt oranges and hues of browns. You want your family to coordinate but NOT match. Neutrals (creams, tan, charcoal grey and brown taupe) are a good place to start, mixed with some rich jewel tones (navy, blues, mustard, burgundy, burnt orange and mauve). Try to pick two main hues and a neutral. Use the colors sparingly and try to coordinate through out the family without over doing it with matching outfits. A good rule to go by is the ‘X-Rule’. You want to spread the colors out evenly, So if dad is wearing a predominantly navy sweater, then maybe one of the kids can wear navy pants. Another way to coordinate your colors is through accessories.

As far as patterns go, if you are going to go with plaid or a pattern, stick to ONE bold pattern. Two many different patterns going on can be distractive and hard on the eyes. Its best to only have one person (or two if you have a large family) in print or pattern. The other family members might be able to coordinate with that pattern by incorporating it into an accessory such as a scarf, or wearing solid colors matching their pattern.

ACCESSORIES & LAYERS

Layer up with accessories! Use your accessories to accent the color palette you have chosen. Think scarfs, hats, belts and knee high boots! The possibilities are endless. Just remember you will walking around and playing with your kids so comfort is always first! That goes for layers too. I suggest thin layers for fall. Its not too cold yet so no need to dress up in your puffy down jacket. Thin layers will allow you to move around freely and wont add any bulk. Feel free to bring a cozy blanket that co ordinates with your outfits. We can grab some beautiful shots of you snuggling as a family together sitting on a blanket.

DRESS IT UP OR GO MORE CASUAL?

Mom’s, if you are comfortable wearing dresses, embrace the MAXI. Maxi dresses are soft and flowy and look AH-MAZING in photos. Feel free to dress up! How often do you get your family photos professionally taken? Make the most of it. Suspenders and bow ties on little boys are adorable. If casual is more your style, then think knee high boots and cute accessories to dress up your outfit.

Here are some great examples below of dressing it up a little…

Final Touches

Give your self plenty of time to get ready for your session that day. If you have kids, you know that dressing the family is never smooth sailing. You want your day to be enjoyable and not tainted by the stress of having to get out of the house on time. Have all your outfits out and ready the day before. If you have something you THINK you would like to incorporate into your session, bring it! It is better to have it, than wish you had brought it. The day is meant to be fun and I want to capture some happy moments between your family that you can look back on in years to come!

And if this all fails, Here is a Pinterest Board I put together to get you started!

I can not wait to see your there! I hope this was helpful in your Fall Session Preperations!
